The Bread Lottery is a remixed version of my Grandfather’s memoir of being a P.O.W. in the Second World War. The original book was written in a traditional narrative style. It tells of his capture in Normandy in 1944, the journey through France on foot, and across Germany into Poland. It contains masses of fascinating details about Europe during this period, and gives insights into the training of young Welshmen in preparation for the liberation of France.

The Bread Lottery breaks down this text into an interactive story made in Twine. You must choose which memories to access, and in what order to read them. The adds a fragmented layer to the narrative, demonstrating how many stories from the war are now lost forever.

This is a fascinating tale of one soldier’s journey from the valleys of South Wales to the sugar factories of Poland. You can find your own unique path through this story, and learn some what it was like to be a young Welsh soldier in the war. The download is a HTML file, which can be played in most browsers.
